Deadlift Competition Rules

This is a fun, unsanctioned deadlift competition. Our rules are simplified and based on standard powerlifting deadlift rules.

Each lifter will receive 3 attempts. Your heaviest successful lift will count as your final result.

A good lift

To receive a GOOD LIFT, you must:

  • Begin with the bar on the floor.

  • Lift the bar until you are standing fully upright with your knees locked and shoulders back/upright.

  • Hold the bar at lockout until the judge gives the “DOWN” command.

  • After the command, keep both hands on the bar and return it to the floor under control.

  • Maintain your balance until the bar is back on the floor.

Conventional and sumo deadlifts are both allowed.
Any grip style is allowed.

A no lift

Your attempt will be called NO LIFT if:

  • You do not reach full lockout.

  • The bar moves downward before you reach the finished position.

  • You support or hitch the bar on your thighs.

  • You step forward or backward or lose your balance before receiving the “DOWN” command.

  • You lower the bar before receiving the “DOWN” command.

  • You drop or release the bar rather than controlling it back to the floor.

Judging

There will be one head judge for each attempt.

There is no start command—begin your deadlift when you are ready. Once you reach lockout, wait for the judge to give the “DOWN” command.

The judge will then call the attempt GOOD LIFT or NO LIFT.

We’ll review the rules and demonstrate a good lift before the competition begins, so no previous competition experience is necessary.

Equipment

Belts, chalk, knee sleeves, and wrist wraps are allowed. Lifting straps, supportive deadlift suits, and knee wraps are not allowed.
